Do I Need a CURP and RFC as a Foreigner in Mexico?
Short answer: It depends on your visa and plans. Short-term tourists (1–5 months): no. Long-term residents who want a bank account, lease, or property: yes, you need both. Anyone doing business in Mexico: yes, with the correct visa type. As of 2026, the Biometric CURP is mandatory for all official procedures.

CURP is Mexico’s universal ID number. RFC is your tax ID from the SAT. You need CURP before RFC. Since February 2026, the old paper CURP is obsolete — you must get the new Biometric CURP (plastic card with fingerprints and iris scan) at a RENAPO office. For bank accounts at BBVA, Santander, or Banorte, you need both CURP and RFC. For property purchases, the notario requires your RFC. If you only have a tourist visa (FMM), you cannot get an RFC. Temporary or Permanent Residents can get a Limited RFC (banking only) or Full RFC (if you have a work permit).
